Program Details

The Safe, Secure and Loved: Resilient Families Programs were initially developed and continue to be improved in collaboration with communities and stakeholders who share the vision of  "community healing community".   All educational materials and practices in Safe, Secure and Loved: Resilient Families are based on current research evidence and best practices in how to support healthy family relationships and prevent child maltreatment and abuse.  All of the programs in Safe Secure and Loved: Resilient Families are organized around habits of resilience which promote healthy families by focusing on sensitive family connections; an awareness of the ‘teachability’ of self regulation skills important for brain development; and better management of parenting stress.  The habits of resilience are rooted in mindful breathing and self compassion exercises and provide a highly engageing approach to sensitive and responsive parenting practices.  In six (90-minute) workshops, parents learn about personal, family, and community resilience, and practice ways to strengthen inner wisdom for sensitive and responsive parenting.  Workshops include guided discussion and participation in family games, crafts, and children’s books, as well as the practice of mindful breathing and self compassion exercises. Parents learn habits of resilience as actionable patterns of parenting that they can use which will help with challenges of daily family life and promote family joy.

Safe, Secure and Loved: Resilient Families Parent Education Programs include workbooks for parents and workshop materials ('resilient reminders', crafts, games, and books). Facilitator workbooks and extensive online training empowers community champions to successfully implement and facilitate Safe, Secure and Loved Parent Education workshops. This COMMUNITY-LED "neighbor-to-neighbor" model to support healthy families and prevent child maltreatment has been embraced by diverse communities, and this has allowed for rapid growth and outreach. Community groups (nonprofit agencies, faith-based groups, academic research teams etc.) have been able to successfully implement and sustain the Safe, Secure and Loved: Resilient Families parent education programs within their community.
