In collaboration with communities, Dr. Barbara Burns developed Safe, Secure and Loved: Resilient Families Parent Education Programs across more than 30 years of work as a developmental psychologist and early intervention specialist. All educational materials and practices in Safe, Secure and Loved: Resilient Families are based on current research evidence and best practices in early intervention. Safe Secure and Loved: Resilient Families is organized around six habits of resilience which promote strong parent-child attachment through sensitive family connections; an awareness of the ‘teachability’ of self regulation skills important for brain development; and better management of parenting stress.  The habits of resilience are rooted in mindful breathing and self compassion exercises and provide a novel and compelling approach to sensitive and responsive parenting practices.  In six (90-minute) workshops, parents learn about personal, family, and community resilience, and practice ways to strengthen inner strengths for sensitive and responsive parenting.  Workshops include guided discussion and participation in family games, crafts, and children’s books, as well as the practice of mindful breathing and self compassion exercises. Parents learn habits of resilience as actionable patterns of parenting that they can bring to the challenges and joys of daily family life.

Safe, Secure and Loved: Resilient Families Parent Education Programs include workbooks for parents and workshop materials ('resilient reminders', crafts, games, and books). Facilitator workbooks and dedicated training allow community champions to successfully implement and facilitate Safe, Secure and Loved Parent Education Groups. Our community champions "neighbor-to-neighbor" model has been embraced by diverse communities, and this has allowed for rapid growth and outreach. Following the completion of training by community champions, community groups (nonprofit agencies, faith-based groups, academic research teams etc.) have been able to expand the Safe, Secure and Loved: Resilient Families parent education programs within their community.
